On the Old Hawthorne green at 4 p.m. today, Sept. 5, the girls golf team played Hickman High School and Jefferson City High School to defend its undefeated status.
The game finished at 7:45 p.m., with RBHS tying Hickman at 165 strokes for first. By tying for the win, the team  hung onto its undefeated title. However, the shared victory with the Kewpies only tightened the Bruin girls’ resolve to win in future matches.
“We recently broke our record with a 150, which is really good,” senior Makayla Baker said. And “I know that we’re not going to shoot that every time, but I also  know that we can shoot a lot better than 15 strokes over our limit.”
Baker started the match on a good foot, but after a small mistake on the fourth hole with a triple bogey (three over par), she lost her momentum. Although the entire team scored 15 over their record, Baker remains optimistic for the future.
“We all struggled with our short game, which is chipping and putting,” Baker said. “And I know that’s what we’re going to spend our next two practices on, at least a couple hours at each practice, really buckling down, and focusing and being more serious about practice than we normally are.”
The JV team plays at Heritage Hills in a tournament tomorrow, Sept. 6, while the varsity team plays next at the Smith Cotton Tournament in Sedalia Monday, Sept. 10.
