Winning three out of four games at the Kewpie Klassic tournament Sept. 21-22, the RBHS girls varsity softball team lost only to the defending state champions, Troy.
The Bruins played Kirksville High School, Troy Buchanan High School, Blair Oaks High School and St. Dominic High School during the course of two days.
Even though they did lose the championship, senior Krista Blomenkamp said the team played with the same intensity that they always have.
“The fact that it’s a tournament and you play multiple games really tests a lot of teams’ mental game,” Blomenkamp said. “But we strive to treat each game with the same importance, and we tend to play that way as well.”
RBHS won 7-1 against Kirksville, 3-1 against Blair Oaks, 6-2 against St. Dominic and lost 1-6 to Troy. Despite the overall successful outcome, junior Shelbie Atwell said it wasn’t always easy keeping moral up in light of the weekend they tourney fell on.
“The toughest part of the tournament, no doubt, was missing the Providence Bowl,” Atwell said. “We were really really disappointed, but the team did very well at putting that on the back burner when it came time to play ball and time to focus on our game.”
The team’s next game is Monday, Sept. 24, at RBHS where both varsity and JV will play Helias Catholic.
