Clinching their rackets in the perfect weather yesterday, RBHS girls tennis team was geared to contend in a two-day district competition. The Bruins played against Hannibal Oct. 2, where the girls defended their 14 years as district champions. They finished strong with a 6-0 in singles.
Positive thoughts loomed in the air as the girls competed again today. By 5:30 this evening the girls wrapped up their district run with another 6-0 win, this time against cross town rival, Hickman Kewpies.
Although the district championship is an accomplishment, to the team, it signifies only one mark on the road to a state title. To junior Allison Baker, winning districts was only another step needed to advance to the sectional and state tournament.
“I’m really excited to be moving forward,” Baker said. “This just means were one step closer to a state championship.”
As they put districts behind them, the team prepares for sectionals Oct. 13 in St. Louis, one week from Saturday. The winning team continues on to the state competition later on in the month.
“We’re definitely working really hard,” Baker said. “We’re having extra practices and coach is pushing us harder than usual too.”
