The girls varsity volleyball team traveled to Rockwood Summit High School in Fenton, Mo. for its first tournament of the season Saturday, Sept. 14. The girls went into this day of game play undefeated. By the end of the day, the Bruins accumulated a tournament win with a season record of 8-0, beating out five teams in tournament play.
Throughout the day they played several Missouri teams from St.Louis, Kansas City and Webster Groves. RBHS’ first three games went by quickly. They defeated the St. Louis Lift For Life Academy first (25-9, 25-8), Webster Groves High (25-18, 25-19) and Mehlville High (25-13, 25-12). However, going into this tournament, the girls were unsure of how the day would go.
“We knew we were capable,” varsity player Annah Webber said. “But we don’t usually play many teams for the St. Louis area so we didn’t really know what to expect.”
RBHS was up against Northeast High School from Kansas City next in the semi-finals. They won the first set 25-13, but went into the second set of the game with a little less power. However, they quickly gained it back and finished out the set on top with a close score of 26-24.
“We came out on top the first game and were expecting the second game to be just as easy, they just came back and were throwing things back at us that we weren’t ready for,” Webber said. “We brought up the communication and just played like everyone knows we can [and won].”
The girls moved on to the finals and were up against Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School (MICDS). This team worked just as hard to get into the finals and showed that by keeping close with RBHS throughout their game. The girls played their hardest and were rewarded with a tournament win. The scores of the finals game were 25-16, 25-20.
“I would say our hardest opponent was MICDS. They were just as good as we are. They had their powerful hitters and put up blocks. We just had heart and worked together,” Webber said. “We’ve grown as a team this season, and this tournament just made us stronger because we had to work together. It’s great and I just can’t wait to keep on this journey with these girls.”
The Bruin varsity girls volleyball team will play Herman High School along with the ninth grade and junior varsity teams at home on Tuesday, Sept. 17 starting at 5 p.m.
