Rock Bridge High School cancelled the Homecoming Bonfire shortly before school let out Thursday after a warning from the Columbia Fire Department.

The bonfire was to be held in the south lot at 7:30 p.m, and Bru Crew was cosponsoring the event with Rock Bridge Student council, and was called off due to high winds.

“We put a lot of time into planning it so it’s disappointing,” senior chairman of the Bonfire Committee Nathan Horvit said, “but we can’t control the weather.”

The assistant Fire Marshall said when the wind speed is over ten miles per hour, any scheduled burns are automatically cancelled, Horvit said. This is the third straight year bonfire plans have been scratched due to inclement weather conditions. This was set to be the first such event since 2009.

“In the most simple terms, it’s a bummer,” senior student body president and Bru Crew leader Jack Schimpf said, “but it’s just the way it happens sometimes.”
