Bruins’ doubles teams advance to state

[heading]Doubles teams advance from individual regional’s, while the singles players lose their matches.[/heading] The RBHS girls’ tennis team played Individual Regionals this past week, from Tuesday, Oct. 14 to Thursday, Oct. 18. There were two doubles teams and two individuals who competed in this event. The double teams consisted of junior Phoebe Boeschen and senior Sophi Farid on one team and senior Allison Baker and sophomore Hannah Pohl on the other. The single teams consisted of sophomore Tess Lovig on the first team and sophomore Ronnie Farid on the second team.
The double teams won both games by a large margin against the losing teams. Baker and Pohl’s team had a very tough challenge in the second set, but they pulled through and came out on top at the end.
The single teams also competed with passion but unfortunately ended up succumbing to the opposing team for both games. Ronnie played one of the better players in the state and did well in the first set but couldn’t keep up in the second set. The girls’ coach, Ben Loeb, said that even though the girls didn’t seize a victory, they gave an impressive performance.
“Tess Lovig played a girl we played last year in the individual sectional as well, and we knew she was good,” Loeb said. “She had a great day and she played very well, but we didn’t win that one.”
The teams that won in this week’s Individual Sectionals will advance to the Individual State doubles tournament, which will be held next Friday, Oct. 25, through Saturday, Oct. 26.  The Team Sectionals matches will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Bethel Park.  The winners of those games will advance to the Final Four Semifinals next Thursday, Oct. 24.
