The Bruins’ wrestling team lost both matches against Seckman High School and Staley High School in a dual meet Jan. 29.

First, the team faced Seckman, which they lost to 47-27, and then lost again to Staley 51-21.

One of the best wrestlers on the team and the No. 1 Class 4 wrestler, senior Sam Crane won his first match 17-2, and then faced the No. 1 wrestler in Class 3 on Staley’s team, triumphing 7-1. Despite his success, Crane knows that the team as a whole had some things to fix before they can win their next matches.

“Consistency wins, especially in wrestling,” Crane said. “You stay consistent with your diet, how hard you work in the practice room and keeping that killer instinct win everytime you go onto the wrestling mat. That’s how we will bounce back.”

Senior Quinn Smith, who will be wrestling at South Dakota State University next year, defeated the No. 2 wrestler in Class 4 from Seckman 6-4 and then won his second match 8-1.

“We need to improve our weaknesses,” Smith said. “And keep improving where we are strong to get ready for what ultimately matters which is districts and state.”

Senior Jason Kiehne won his matches 10-1 and 5-0 against Seckman and Staley, respectively.

“We need to improve on not giving up as many team points,” Kiehne said. “We did well on head positioning and feet movement.”

The team seems unfazed by this loss, as there are still two weeks to correct things before the District tournament that starts Feb. 15.

“We all have individual things we need to work on,” Kiehne said. “So we need to go into the practice room and fix our mistakes.”

“We salute our Senior Wrestlers!!! Maybe that, along with a picture of the seniors on senior night might have been a better title instead of “Wrestling suffers two losses at home”! The “Senior Night” media guide had plenty of info and bio on each wrestler that would have been really nice to have in your article.
