Girls soccer plays Lee’s Summit West; faces tough loss

After starting the Jefferson City Capital City Classic with a win, the RBHS girls soccer team lost their second game of the day against Lee’s Summit West with a score of 2-1. Although the team played as hard as they could, they were unable to recreate their success earlier in the day. Girls soccer coach Gary Drewing said that despite the loss, the team can still come away better off.

“Every loss is a lesson, every win a reward,” Drewing said. “Confidence and positive energy is the key to the rest of our season. Every win boosts confidence, every win boosts confidence, confidence breeds success.”

As a defender, sophomore Ronni Farid puts a lot of the blame for the loss on herself. Farid said that although she thought that the team played well, she thinks that she, along with her team, needs to work on going for every ball even when they are tired.

“I focus on gaining possession,” Farid said. “It’s my job to protect our goal but I always have to ensure that our offense has the ability to reach the other goal. I know that with my other defenders behind me, I can step up and take chances while also having their backs too.”

After a loss, the team tries to regroup and figure out what they need to work on. Farid said that she always plays harder after a loss, striving to avoid another one. She said that the team really comes together and improves after a tough loss.

“A loss pushes us to work harder and learn from our mistakes,” Farid said. “After a loss, I always want to get back on the field as soon as possible and fight.”

However, winning is not everything. The team always tries to have fun whenever they play, win or loss. Sophomore midfielder Cara Wilfong said that whenever she plays, she always has a lot of fun.

“Anytime I am with the team I have a lot of fun,” Wilfong said. “Whenever we are at tournaments, we have a lot of bonding time that really brings us closer. The best part of playing with the team is having so much fun.”
