The boys varsity tennis team celebrated another win yesterday at a Jefferson City meet, with seven players winning their single matches and only one loss. The meet was an important one, preceding district finals, so the team reveled in their success.

Going into districts on the heels of victory is exactly what the team needed to get ready for the even tougher competition, senior Harry Bozoian, said.

“All of the top six varsity played and I think the win puts us in a good spot heading into districts,” Bozoian said. “I think everyone feels confident moving into the post season coming off of a big win.”

In addition to Bozoian, yesterday’s competing players included top six team members Rohit Rao, Raymond majors, Brian Bajer, John swift and Harsh Singh. Rao, a junior, said despite the win, he was unsatisfied with his own performance and believes the team could have performed better.

Following a win against Clayton and Kirkwood at Bethel Park last weekend, he said he was surprised the team didn’t put up as intense of competition as they could have.

“Everyone won except for me,” Rao said. “I played a guy who I’m friends with. We have both beat each other and he played better than me yesterday. Overall as a team we didn’t play as competitive as we did last weekend against a much tougher team such as Clayton.”

With the toughest of competition yet to come, Rao said the team will utilize their remaining practice time to refine specific aspects of their performance. Though the players can sometimes lack an ambitious attitude, he said the excitement surrounding districts may be enough to fire up the team before the big meet.

“As we are going into districts next week, we are planning on sharpening up on both our singles and doubles skills,” Rao said. “Our strength is our overall team cohesiveness but our weakness is definitely the lack of energy and competitiveness we have sometimes. But when the team gets pumped, we excel.”
