The Spartans were no match for Bruin’s veteran players, with the varsity, junior varsity and freshmen team all stomping BHS on their own court Oct. 8.
The varsity team handily defeated Battle in straight sets, 25-12 and 25-11.
Varsity head coach Robin Sherman said the game was a breeze for the girls, and a good, hands-on learning experience for players who normally watch from the bench.
“I think the game went really well. It was a good opportunity for some girls to get some playing time,” Sherman said. “The girls were very good at keeping a positive energy throughout the game and it carried us through.”
Throughout the season Sherman said she has reminded the girls that the team is not dependent on one player but, rather, a combined effort that is contingent on each girl putting forth her skills to best of her ability.
“Like I said to the girls in the locker room before the game, there are no star players on the team,” Sherman said. “We all work together and it makes the team what they are.”
Sophomore setter Ally Offerdahl agreed that the game was light-hearted and said it was fun to get more girls involved, along with breaking old habitats.
“When we play teams like that I really like switching up the sets to Carly Offerdahl and Deidre Mattson when I get perfect passes from Lydia Murphy,” Offerdahl said. “It was pretty easy because the competition wasn’t very hard.”
Junior defensive specialist Mariah Fitzpatrick noted some mistakes in the girls’ game though.
“Overall I feel like as a team we weren’t connecting as well as we normally do and we had too many service errors,” Fitzpatrick said. “However, we worked hard and pushed through the struggles and thankfully came out with a win.”
Although the team cruised past Battle, Sherman still sees places where the team is lacking.
“I think the girls could improve on communication with passing,” Sherman said. “And [the team] could also work at hitting, with so many girls on the net we need a little practice there.”
The team plays their next game at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in  Blair Oaks.
