The girls basketball team got back on track for the season after a fighting 45-34 win against Blue Springs. The game was close for most on the time until the Bruins broke free fourth period. Senior Sophie Cunningham said this game defined the team’s true competitive attitude.

2. Cunningham led the way with 20 points.
3. RBHS started the last quarter with a 5-0 run to extend their lead.
4. The team moved to 10-3 on the season after the win.[/box]

“It was a very good team win,” Cunningham said. “We got a chance to show our grit this game. They have a good team, and we have a good team, so we always knew it would be competitive from start.”
While Cunningham was almost unstoppable this game, her future University of Missouri-Columbia teammate Cierra Porter was not at her usual best. Porter said she needs to work on some things in her game, but the team is starting to peak during the right time of the season.
“It’s important for us to build momentum from this game because the playoffs aren’t far away,” Porter said. “I need to improve my game for sure, but the team is starting its high points very consistently now. We are hungry for more.”
Agreeing with Porter and Cunningham, head coach Jill Nagel said the team’s high intensity practices paid dividends this game.
“Our practices always try to replicate the games,” Nagel said. “We played with full intensity this game, and I am really proud of this win.”
With the playoffs looming, Porter said the team needs to get in the right mindset again.
“It’s about trying to fix the mistakes your make during games in practices,” Porter said. “You want to play perfect basketball during the playoffs, and to achieve that, you have to work really during practice.”
