Bruin wrestlers compete at state, Ratermann takes third

This weekend three Bruin wrestlers competed at the MSHSAA Championships at Mizzou Arena. Starting Thursday evening RBHS’s three state qualifiers battled through their respective brackets.
106:
In the opening round sophomore Brock Davis recorded a hard fought 3-2 victory over Jackson’s Gus Guilliams. In the quarterfinal Davis fell to Park Hill freshman and eventual third placer Kevin Eblen 6-4. In wrestlebacks Davis lost to Jacob Smith from Francis Howell North 6-2 to end his sophomore campaign.
120:
Junior Josiah Kline recorded an opening round win against Northwest’s Tyler Stegall 6-1. In the quarterfinals Kline fell to Rockhurst’s Cameron Valdiviez 4-1 and after the match due to fatigue and a knee injury pulled out of the tournament.
170:
Senior Graham Ratermann opened with a 8-4 victory over Hazelwood West’s Nick Lange. In the quarterfinal Ratermann stuck to the trend and dropped a 4-0 decision to Staley freshman Zach Elam. In wrestlebacks Ratermann defeated returning state medalist Carson McCord of Jackson 7-2 to advance to the blood round. In the blood round Ratermann defeated another returning state medalist this time beating Holt’s Austin Keller 3-0. In the consolation semifinal Ratermann bested Park Hill South senior Dylen Propes 7-1. In the third place match Ratermann capped off his season and high school career with a 5-1 victory over Braden Best of Raytown to finish his senior campaign with a 52-3 record and a career record of 149-49.
As a team the Bruins finished in 29th with 18.0 team points. Park Hill, the team RBHS took second to last year, repeated as Class Four state champions with 129.5 points.
