Show choir benefits local charity True North

On Tuesday night, Feb. 10, RBHS show choirs put on a benefit performance with all proceeds going to True North, an organization that aids female victims of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.
Through ticket sales, raffles, and donations the fundraiser collected over $3000.
Every year show choir puts on a benefit performance to help boost a community charity financially. The students themselves pick who to help, City Lights member junior Neil Cathro said.
“To pick the charity, we had a poll and about four options that everyone voted on. I was really excited to see True North won because in middle school I had placed in their annual essay contest and it was like a full circle kind of thing,” Cathro said. “I also think domestic violence and abuse is a very relevant issue; President Obama even made a statement about it on the Grammy’s the other day and that is True North’s area of focus. It’s neat that we got to contribute to an issue that is so important in society today.”
Satin n’ Lace member junior Gabby Jones has seen the prevalence of abuse in high school relationships first hand and said she is happy to help boost True North in their mission of combating abuse and advocating for victims of abuse.
“I love to help people and give some of my blessings to other people. The charity has become important to me because I think that because of all the terrible things that happen in this world to people, women in [this case] need a safe place, a place to fall back on when life or their relationship isn’t going so well. They need a safety net. They need a warm blanket and a smiling face,” Jones said.  “I’ve met a lot of  hurt and scared girls just in high school that have been abused by their boyfriends and I’m sure that the number just gets larger as we get older. That’s why I’m glad true north is our charity benefit this year.”
Members benefit themselves as well when serving the community, by getting in more practice during the thick of competition season, without the pressures of winning.
“Performing for a benefit is really cool because it’s gives us a chance to give back and also to perform more,” Cathro said. “We have so many concerts to fundraiser for us, so it’s exciting to have all these people from the community come and let us support them instead.”
