Top 5 Mother’s Day DIY’s

Top+5+Mothers+Day+DIYs

Mother’s Day: a time to celebrate, appreciate and if you are anything like me, frantically scour through the house to find that perfect (or at least halfway decent) gift the night before. Doing it DIY style is a cheaper and sweeter alternative to the usual drugstore chocolate and card. So here’s five homemade presents that have been trialed for your convenience.

 Whipped Coconut Moisturizer

This “do it yourself “ gift centers around simplicity and would best suit a someone who loves to have hydrated skin especially in the warmer months. I customized mine by cocoa powder and vanilla which made it smell amazing, but any essential oil will do. I also used a mason jar to store it, which works great, but even an old lotion bottle would do the trick.  A couple of things that should be taken into account are that since it quickly turns into liquid only use a little at a time and be careful not to stain clothes or furniture.

Ingredients:
1-2 cups of solid coconut oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
 Other supplies:
Whisk (whether with a machine or not)
Any empty container with a lid
 Steps:

  1. Fill bowl with ingredients
  2. Whisk until coconut oil is light and fluffy
  3. Fold into container
  4. Decorate as you please!

Mason Jar Flowers

This Mother’s Day present is a perfect decoration that will brighten up any room. Any mother who enjoys greenery around the house will really enjoy it. It’s easily customizable from the flowers you choose to the decorations on the box. Be sure to assemble outside as dirt could go all over the place and choose the right sized flowers for your jars- as it doesn’t look as cute.

Supplies:
3 ‘bundles’ of live flowers
3 mason jars
1 wooden box
Dirt
 Steps:

  1. Put the flowers into the mason jars carefully
  2. Put the mason jars into the box
  3. Decorate as you please

Potted Succulents

This present will take any coffee table to the next level, and will make any type of mother happy. Be gentle when you’re planting the succulents as I found their leaves can easily break off and check on the label when you buy them to take note of how to properly take care of them.

Supplies:
Bowl
Succulents (as many as you can fit)
Paint and other decor
 Steps:

  1. Decorate bowl
  2. Fill bowl nearly to the top with good quality soil

String Art Heart

Whether it’s placed on the wall or on a side table, displaying this piece of art will simply enchant your mom. Make sure you take safety precautions and have a sturdy surface when nailing. I would also recommend hammering each nail evenly, because it works a lot better when adding the string. I only used one color of string but you can use more for an interesting effect.

Supplies:
Yarn
10-20 nails
Wooden plaque (easily available at Hobby Lobby for 2 dollars)

Steps:

  1. Hammer nails in a shape or design you like (I chose a heart)
  2. Tie yarn onto a nail
  3. Start criss crossing yarn between nails until satisfied

Lotus Flower Jewelry Holder

A cute and simple way for mom to keep all the earring backs, keys and loose rings together. This is the toughest of the five, just because the leaves need to be very close in size and shape. Also be sure to check if the clay is smooth and free of small particles of dirt and dust when you put in the oven, for best results.

Supplies:

1 block of Sculpey clay (I used ballerina pink)

1 oven

1 oven proof bowl

Wax paper

Rolling pin

Steps:

1. Preheat oven to 220°

2. Roll out clay onto wax paper

3.Cut out 12 symmetrical leaves

4.Arrange them into a flower shape in the bow

5. Bake flower with bowl in the oven for 20 minutes

6.Turn off oven and leave flower in for another 5 minute

7. Take out of oven and allow to rest for 20 minutes
