Chinese Boy: “First of all, keep him out of the light, he hates bright light, especially sunlight, it’ll kill him. Second, don’t give him any water, ,not even to drink. But the most important rule, the rule you can never forget, no matter how much he cries, no matter how much he begs, never feed him after midnight.”
As probably the most famous line from the movies Gremlin, you’d be hard pressed to try and find someone who doesn’t know the rules of caring for a mogwai. In 1984, Director Joe Dante created a movie that wasn’t your average Christmas film. This multi-generation classic about a father giving his son the worst Christmas gift of all time is definite must-watch for this Christmas season.
Struggling inventor Randall “Rand” Peltzer (Hoyt Axton) wants to get his son Billy (Zach Galligan)something special for Christmas and wanders to a strange shop in Chinatown, and finds an odd-looking pet and tries to buy it from the store’s manager. Although at first he refuses to sell the Mogwai to Rand, his grandson later gives it to him, and tells him the rules states above as a warning for what could possibly go wrong. Later, when he brings home the mogwai, Billy becomes instantly attached to it and named him Gizmo and for a while things seem to go well. Until Billy spills water on him, making him multiply, and then later feeds Stripe, and the rest of the duplicates after midnight, thus breaking the most important rule for when taking care of Mogwais, and unknowingly creates the Gremlins, and makes an uproar that might change your perspective on keeping domestic animals.
Dante’s horror/comedy is a testament to it’s genre, and shows how two different tastes in movies can be intertwined. It raked in hundreds of millions of dollars for the box office, and created a line of creepy yet adorable gremlin statues. With eerie scenes like to the town’s resident gold digger Mrs. Deagle being thrown out the window by her stair lift, to the noises of your basement that sound like little creatures causing ruckus throughout the night, Gremlins is the kind of movie that’ll make movies like Bad Santa look normal.
