Freshman Siena Juhlin lines up with fellow Columbia high schools in the 100 meter dash, hoping to get a lead start on the competition. The next JV only meet will take place April 12 at Battle
Last night RBHS JV team met up Battle, Hickman, and Jefferson City High School in their first meet without the varsity team. With the focus on just them, many underclassmen were able to test out their strengths, and learn what to work on for future meets.
Sophomore Morgan Banker believes that this meet served as a proving ground for the team, and though she placed first in pole vault, still thinks that improvement for her and the team is always a priority.
“I think overall the team did good, but I didn’t do as well as I had hoped to, but that happens sometimes,” Banker said. “I think we can improve by practicing our specific events more often, like relays handoffs, and technical events like throws, vertical and horizontal jumps.”
Banker isn’t the only one who performed well at the meet last night. Junior Adam Barchet competed in the 200 and 400 meter races, placing first in both. Although he agrees the team could improve mostly on their technical work, they had a stellar performance and their support for each other really lent a hand in their performance.
“I think everyone did pretty good for their first JV-only meet” Barchet said. “The team was there supporting the runners during their events and cheering them on, which was very encouraging.”
With the next JV only meet coming up next week on the 12th, Banker hopes to achieve her personal goals as a pole vaulter, as well as see the team perform at their peak.
“By the end of the season I really hope to be vaulting at the 10’6” height but would still be very happy with 10’.” Banker said. “As for the team, I hope that we place well at districts and continue to place well throughout sectionals and state.”
