Super Saturday for October ACT canceled

According to the RBHS website, the guidance department canceled the Super Saturday scheduled for Oct. 15 to prepare for the ACT on Oct. 22.
“It was canceled because we had conflicting events for the math teacher who taught the math section. October is a crazy month for a lot of teachers,” EEE supervisor Gwen Struchtemeyer said. “Only a few students had signed up so guidance made the final call to cancel.”
Director of Counseling Betsy Jones decided to cancel because of  the financial pressures of having a Super Saturday with so little attendance.
“We only had 18 students sign up, so it wasn’t cost effective to sign up. We order 100 tests, so we typically serve about 80 students,” Jones said. “It’s very expensive because we also pay teachers for the two hours of prep and two hours of teaching.”
Some students are frustrated from the cancellation, however. For senior Bana Daghlas, it’s the last  time she’ll take the ACT before she submits her college applications and is nervous about not having the Super Saturday.
“I understand why it was canceled, but it just makes me nervous,” Daghlas said. “But even now I’m not too worried because I can still just self study with Ms. Struchtemeyer.”
Daghlas references the fact that Struchtemeyer and several other teachers, such as math teacher Angel Renick, are available during their free periods for ACT tutoring.
“I told all the parents who had signed up for the Super Saturday to send their kids to me. I have multiple practice tests and I can help with all the sections,” Struchtemeyer said. “Other mathematics and science teachers are available to tutor in their free periods and are happy to help. [Super Saturday may have been canceled], but there are not a lack of resources.”
Super Saturdays, according to the RBHS website and registration sheet, are mock ACT sessions where students take a full practice ACT in a testing environment and then review each section with a teacher familiar with the subject.
