Guidance office provides opportunity to give back

Guidance+office+provides+opportunity+to+give+back

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hen students walk into the guidance office looking for assistance with scheduling classes or college applications, they may be surprised to find that they themselves are able to contribute to the school and community.
A Christmas tree, decorated with lights, gloves, hats and mittens, sits in the front of room. Director of Counseling Betsy Jones explained that anybody at RBHS is able to contribute to the tree.
“The counseling department started [the hat and mitten tree] about eight years ago,” Jones said. “We wanted to make a donation to the community during the holiday season.”
Students are able to take warm clothing off of the tree as needed, and along with faculty and staff, can make donations by dropping off materials in the counseling center. The tree will be taken down on the final day of the semester, and the remaining clothing will get donated to the Rainbow House.
Giving tree benefits school and community
Sophomore Darius Bryan believes that the tree is a beneficial system to the school.
“I think it is just a really good system,” Bryan said. “It is always good to give back to those in the community.”
For freshman Clay Schneider, the tree represents more than a method to give back to the school. It doubles as a way to engage students.
“It is easy to take things for granted, like warm clothing during this time of the year,” Schneider said. “It also makes you feel like you are a part of something bigger than yourself. It is a good way to get involved with the school, and it makes you proud to be a RBHS student.”
Ultimately, Jones believes that the positive impacts for the community are worth the donations.
“[Warm clothes] really helps [the Rainbow House] allow children time outside,” Jones said. “[Children] typically come to the Rainbow House without appropriate winter gear.”
