Boys’ golf places first in Helias Invitational

The boys’ varsity golf team drove to Bloomfield Mo. to play in the Helias Invitational Tournament at 9 a.m. April 17. More than 20 teams played in the tournament, including Jefferson City High School, Hickman High School and Battle High School, yet, RBHS came out on top with a whopping 306.
Junior Sam Rentschler said this win was a success on part of a collaborative team effort and that everyone showed what it meant to be a determined, bruin golfer. Despite his confidence, Rentschler still sees the pathway to state as a rocky one in which he needs to practice and prepare for.
“Getting off the tee was my weak point today. It took me 14 holes to figure it out but I was standing too close to the ball and was swinging outside to in,” Rentschler said. “[My goal is to] just keep it in play and make sure not to make anything over bogey be a chess player on the golf course; think in advance and play strategically.”
A strength golf coach Austin Reed highlights in all of his players is their ability to concentrate on their individual game and reach their own focal point in both their mental and physical games.
“They were very poised and focused during the round. Our guys have played the course many times; they know it well. Hudson Dubinski even shot a one under 71, that surprised me,” Reed said. “From here, we just need to practice short putts. It would help our mental game to putt a bunch. Then we will be better prepared for future matches and state.”
The surprising junior, Dubinski, felt the tournament went by smoothly and gained confidence in his game and the team throughout the day. Though there are tedious tasks he believes he should work on, he said this invitational brought more optimistic thoughts.
“I played pretty well, my iron play was probably the best it has been. I just hit a lot close approach shots that allowed me to take the pressure off my putting,” Dubinski said. “The 15th hole[was my best hole] because I hit three really solid shots that led to a birdie. Besides that, I would say with speed on long putts, that’s what I need to work on.”
