Rock Bridge Fashion Files: Emily Lee

Rock Bridge Fashion Files: Emily Lee
[vc_images_carousel images=”295525,295527,295526,295524,295528″ img_size=”400×500″]Walking through the hallways, I often catch myself thinking, “Wow, that person’s outfit is so cool!” The Rock Bridge Fashion Files is kind of my excuse to talk to those people and learn about the thoughts that go into putting together their eye-catching ensembles.
Up first is sophomore Emily Lee, who manages to get most of her clothes at thrift stores and still look like a modern It Girl. After catching glances of her spectacularly styled outfits on my way to class for the past year, I finally got the opportunity to sit down with her and ask about her style and what inspires it.
Q: What does fashion mean to you?
A: “Fashion is how people express themselves because you get to wear whatever you want, and it’s how people see you. So you said I look like I have my life together because of how I dress, but I actually don’t. I just try to wear nice clothes, and that’s what people see.”
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: “My style is like old people style, and I thrift a lot, so a lot of my clothes are old people clothes from the ‘90s or whatever.”
Q: Is there a particular garment or accessory that you find yourself wearing a lot?
A: “I wear these two necklaces every single day, and I literally shower and sleep with them on. They belonged to my mom, and they’re really cute, I guess. They’re just gold necklaces, and I really like them.”
Q: What are your favorite stores to shop at?
A: “Basically any thrift store. I don’t really shop at the mall anymore because it’s really expensive, but I do like the clothes at PacSun. I don’t buy any of them, though; I just like to look at them.”
Q: Who or what influences your style?
A: “This is going to sound weird, but my dad does sometimes. I steal a lot of his sweaters and jackets. This is actually my dad’s jacket that I found in his closet. So yeah, I take his clothes a lot.”
Q: Would you consider yourself a trend follower?
A: “Kind of. I don’t follow the basic mainstream trends, but I do get a lot of inspiration from the people I follow on social media. There isn’t anyone in particular; I just go to my feed, and there are a bunch of cool outfit pictures, and I’m like, ‘Oh, that one looks nice.’”
Q: If you could switch wardrobes with anyone, who would it be?
A: “This is going to sound super basic, but Joanna Kuchta. She’s a blogger, and I just love her clothes.”
Q: Is there a type of garment or accessory that you can’t live without?
A: “I think jeans. Especially these jeans. I really like them; I got them for like $2, and they’re really nice. They’re Tommy [Hilfiger], and I see them on Instagram a lot. Someone probably paid like $200 for them, but I just got them at Goodwill.
Q: How do you find cute things at thrift stores?
A: “You have to go like every weekend and search through everything to actually find good stuff. You have to actually try the clothes on to see if they look good on you because a lot of things look good but not on you. Or some things might look bad, but they’ll look really good once you try them on. I don’t go to Goodwill every weekend because I can’t drive, but I’d like to.”
Q: What motivates you to be well-dressed all the time?
A: “This is kind of random, but last year I was like, ‘What a great idea it would be to wear a different outfit every single day,’ so yeah, that’s what kind of motivated me. But some days I do wear the same clothes, like I have this Adidas hoodie that I wear a lot. I just like to look good. If I look good, I feel good.”
Q: Do you think you would like to pursue fashion as more than just a hobby or an interest?
A: “My mom always thought that I wanted to be a fashion designer, and my aunt is a fashion designer. I’m taking the fabric construction class in school where we make clothes, but I don’t think I’d want to do that [professionally] because you have to be super creative to design clothes. I’d love to do something art-related in the future, hopefully.”
