As the season has progressed and the Bruins are getting further into post-season play, the boys’ basketball team has handled the games with ease. The Bruins coasted through district play, coming out on top of Raymore-Peculiar High School (RPHS) Friday, March 1 with a score of (73-35) in the district championship game.
This win brings the Bruins to [2-0] in post-season play. Though the 2018-2019 season marks the third consecutive district title, the Bruins were extremely excited with the win. Senior guard Spencer Miles recalls one of the best moments of the night being when the team got to share its win with the student section, BruCrew.
“Sharing our trophy with the student section was awesome,” Miles said. “Those are some of our closest friends and biggest supporters. Getting to share our success as one big team and family was incredible.”
While junior guard Brant Bowers couldn’t be happier about the outcome of the game, getting to experience this with his teammates meant the world to him also, he said.

“My favorite part of the night was when we went down to the locker room after the game and everyone was jumping around with Coach Scanlon celebrating the win,” Bowers said. “Playing for [Coach Scanlon], I have learned to not look down the road and just focus on the next game.”
Assistant coach Jordan Showalter believes the Bruins played a great game from the tip-off to the final buzzer. He attributes the team’s success to never slowing down and always playing its best basketball.
“I thought we went out there and executed on both ends of the floor extremely well for the entirety of the game,” Showalter said. “We took care of the basketball, we shared the ball well, we turned them over with our press, and we finished on the other end well. Outside of just a few defensive lapses here and there, we really executed well.”
As a junior, Bowers has never known a Bruin boys’ basketball team that hasn’t won the district title. This, however, does not stop him from realizing its significance.
“I’m feeling so great after the win,” Bowers said. “Not only did we win a game, but we hit a huge milestone by winning the district championship. It’s always a big deal winning the district championship.”
For Miles, this was his last game on RBHS’ home court. While he said this experience was emotional for him, he is not allowing himself to get caught up in the feelings.
“It was definitely sentimental,” Miles said. “The feeling was bittersweet and I’ve had a great time. Now it’s time to move on towards the [championship] ring.”
The Bruins will face Camdenton High School Wed., March 8 at 6:00 p.m. in Sedalia. Continuing the winning streak would land the Bruins in another final four trip to Springfield, Mo..
“We’re just excited that we get to keep playing and have an opportunity to punch our ticket to the Final 4,” Showalter said. “If we keep practicing hard, focusing on the right things, and executing our game plans, we are pretty difficult to beat.”[vc_text_separator title=”Story by Maddie Murphy / Photos by George Frey” color=”custom” accent_color=”#2bb673″]
