Seven members of the boys tennis team headed to St. Louis for the Tournament of Champions on Friday, April 27. By the time they returned home, the Bruins (14-1) had earned third place.
Sophomore Jacob Winton said the team was happy with its overall performances, but members knew there were things they needed to improve if they wanted to do as well as the team did last year. 2011 Bruins boys tennis holds the state title.
Winton said he felt great about his doubles play at the tournament, but he thinks he “did really well and got some good experience.”
Winton won both matches he played in, one with junior Billy Swift against Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School and one with senior Jeremy Lombardo against Pembroke Hill (8-0) in Kansas City, Mo. The match with Swift went to three sets, but Winton and Swift pulled through in the end.
“There’s really tough competition at [Tournament of Champions],” Winton said.
The third place win for the team left them hoping to show improvement in the weeks to come.  Swift said the team has good chemistry, but certain individual things with each person can be tweaked to make the team as a whole even stronger.
“We still have some tough matches,” Swift said, “but our ultimate goal is to go back to state and defend our state title.”
Winton said the for the rest of the season, the team will “just really get serious and focus on doing everything we can to put ourselves in the best position at the end of the season.”
