The Bruin Girls will travel to Lindbergh, Mo. tomorrow, Dec. 1, for their first regional competition in a series of contests that may take them to the state level in February and, eventually, a national contest in Orlando.

“It’s a regional competition, so basically, in order to qualify for state you need to go to one,” senior Kate Harline said. “They do give out awards and stuff, but it’s not a big deal. I mean, we want to do well, but it’s a stepping stone.”

The squad is looking forward to the feedback they will receive from judges at the contest and will use the critiques to polish their performance. These notes will include information on any deductions or things that will hurt the group’s overall score.

“They’ll write down if you do things that are illegal or if we get deductions,” Harline said. “They give us comments; we fix the dance, compete.”

The days leading up to the competition have been packed with rehearsals and stress, but the team is optimistic.

“I’m excited,” Coach Shannon McDaniel said. “It’s been a long process to get here, we’ve just had to make complete changes to both routines the day before we go, so, there’s a lot, but they’ve done really well.”

Roughly 70 schools will compete Saturday in several different categories of dance, known as kick, pom, jazz, mix and prop. The Bruin Girls will compete with two numbers, pom and mix, but plan to add a third later in the season.

“It’s just… trying to get the routines on the floor, get feedback from people who’ve never seen it, make some adjustments,” McDaniel said. “Then state’s really the one that matters the most, and then, from there, take it to nationals.”
