Girls soccer defeats Sacred Heart; advances in tournament

Although the RBHS girls soccer team entered the Jefferson City Capital City Classic tired from their game against BHS the day before, the team would start the tournament with a victory, defeating Sacred Heart High School 2-0. Beginning April 25, the Capital City Classic provides a good opportunity for the team to become closer to  each other. Girls soccer coach Gary Drewing said that he thought the team took a step forward to being ready for the post season.

“We played a nice game against Sacred Heart,” Drewing said. “It was a good team effort and we played the style of soccer we practice.”

Sophomore defender Ronni Farid said it is hard to play games multiple days in a row, especially if they are back to back. Each successive game tires the players out, making it harder for them to play their best each game. Farid said she has certain strategies that she uses in order to play her hardest every game.

“I’m very superstitious so my pre-game prep is always my go to strategy,” Farid said. “I always eat a bag of candy; yes I know;  it’s weird, and I do my hair the same way. I stretch the same way and I have a pre-game playlist I listen, too. Then my team preps all together, which always gets me fully ready.”

Farid said that the team played very well together, passing perfectly for each other and executing well. She said that it is very exciting when the team plays well, especially when she sees her teammates excel.

“We really strived to win,” Farid said, “I always feel amazing after a win, I don’t stop smiling. Whenever we win, it shows us how much we really love soccer and how much it pays off to work together.”

However, the team has to keep improving for each game and learn from their past games. Sophomore midfielder Cara Wilfong said that the after every game, the team needs to focus on playing the next game just as hard, if not harder, every time.

“We played the best soccer we have all year against a very good team,” Wilfong said. “Winning games is always a good feeling, but whether it is a win or a loss we have to move on and think about the next game.”
