Improving to 5-1 on the season, the girls soccer team defeated Lindbergh, 2-1. Although both teams were held scoreless in the first half, RBHS came out in the second half dominating the game, scoring two goals within 15 minutes.
A Lindbergh goal in the 16th minute of the second half halted the Bruins’ momentum, returning the game to the stalemate of the first half and giving RBHS the win. Head coach Gary Drewing said that the team greatly improved from their loss against Blue Springs South.
“We worked together much better today,” Drewing said. “When one player was working we had several to support her, and that won the game. We still had periods where we weren’t playing well, but when we were it was as a group.”
Sophomore midfielder Julia Bower agreed that the team was able to connect better than during the game against Blue Springs South. Bower cited a better warm up and a more pumped up mood among the team that helped push the team into winning. Bower said that once the Bruins changed their strategy after halftime, they were able to score their goals and clinch the win.
“Once we figured out at halftime that the way they were playing opened up our wing players we switched our strategy and exposed our wings so they could get in on a break away,” Bower said.
Despite the win, senior Katie Cook is already looking forward to the team’s upcoming games. Cook said that the team still has things they can work on, especially on defense and counter attacks. Cook believes that although the upcoming games will be tough, the team will be able pull through and get the wins.
“We need to work on marking up in the middle, switching the ball from the back, and playing to our forwards’ feet,” Cook said. “We have a tough week ahead of us so I think seeing what those teams are like and how we handle ourselves against them will be fun to watch.”
