Columbia Public Schools (CPS) won’t be in session tomorrow and won’t reopen until April 13 at the earliest; however, this 26-day cancellation may change depending on future events relating to the coronavirus (COVID-19), CPS Superintendent Dr. Peter Stiepleman said in an email to faculty and staff members yesterday.

Administration to enforce new sanitation polices among Global Village booths

Today’s Global Village has a bit of a twist thanks to health concerns stemming from COVID-19. RBHS principal Jacob Sirna sent an email at 1:08 a.m. March 12 to students and parents announcing stricter sanitation policies for the Global Village celebration than have normally been enforced.

RBHS Model United Nations team competes in MIZMUN conference

The RBHS Model United Nations (MUN) Team competed in its second tournament of the year, the first ever University of Missouri Model United Nations Tournament (MIZMUN), Feb. 29. The tournament had only two competing schools, Columbia Independent School (CIS) and RBHS, and one committee, in which students assumed their roles as delegates representing various countries within the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) during the Cold War. Although the team did not win any delegation awards, junior Maddy Kovaleski won Best Position Paper.

Assistant Principal Tim Baker said sediment flow discolored water from clear to yellow and misty. He said while students should avoid drinking this water, the discoloration doesn’t give any negative health effects.

Media Center offers rewards through ‘Read a Latte’ program

Students who check out books from the RBHS Media Center in the month of February may enter into a raffle to win a free drink voucher from Lakota Coffee as part of the second annual initiative, “Read a Latte.” Through a partnership with Lakota Coffee, each week's raffle winner will receive a voucher for a free drink. Media Center specialist Jill Varns said the program may extend into the first month of March to make up for snow days. She said the Media Center originally began “Read a Latte,” in the hopes of encouraging students to read.

The mandatory Columbia Public Schools (CPS) funded American College Test (ACT) will take place Feb. 25, more than a month earlier than last year's testing date.   Director of counseling Rachel Reed said the earlier scheduling came after the ACT testing company choose a date that clashes with RBHS’ spring break. Reed went on to say that RBHS plays no role in choosing the non-Saturday test date.
